Civilopedia entry[]

The 'alim is a scholar of the Islamic tradition, trained in doctrine, theology, and law. During the Abbasid era, this educational journey began in the madrasa, where religious schooling formed the foundation of the 'alim’s knowledge. Once a scholar completed their education, they were considered one of the ulema (plural of 'alim), a larger community of intellectuals who consulted on matters of theological and legal import.

An 'alim could specialize in a wide variety of topics, including philosophy, law, medicine, and the broader sciences. Many theories spread beyond the boundaries of the Abbasid Caliphate through translation, such as the writings of Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna. Others employed their expertise toward local projects, such as building water clocks and other strange yet wonderful machines. In many ways, the curiosity of the ulema fueled the Golden Age of Islam and established the Abbasid world as a center of thought and learning.
