Civilopedia entry[]
In today’s world of near-instantaneous information, it is hard to imagine how crucial the flow of information was to a functioning empire when that information traveled only as fast as its messenger. For the Mongol Empire, which spread across the known world, a message had to be able to travel from China to Poland as fast as possible. The Mongols attempted to minimize this hurdle by creating a system of checkpoints – Örtöö – where a message could be transferred to a fresh rider and horse, who passed the message along again at another point closer to the destination. These checkpoints were spaced around 30 miles apart and moved messages nearly 200 miles in a day. In the years after the Mongol Empire collapsed, Russians adopted the system, eventually resulting in the postal service.
