Civilopedia entry[]
The guards to the kabaka, the king of Buganda, the Abambowa are an elite group of warriors and caretakers, close to the heart of Gandan rule. Ganda's kingship has a dual nature: a sacred monarchy is represented by regalia while other sources of divine power have their emissary (the word kabaka means emissary) in the body of an individual. The king’s body is sacrosanct, and outsiders are generally not permitted near them, so the Abambowa are a line of defense between the world and the monarchy. Abambowa adhere to a strict code of conduct, abstaining from food and drink before their shifts so they will not have to use the toilet on duty. More to the point, they are equipped with a set of ceremonial equipment: a spear (now a gun), a shield, a machete, and a length of rope for securing potential captives.
