The Academy is an Antiquity Age Science building in Civilization VII.

If the Great Library Legacy Path is completed in the Antiquity Age and the Science Golden Age Legacy Point is chosen during the Age transition, the Academy can become the Golden Age Academy. The Golden Age Academy has all of the Academy's yields, effects and adjacency bonuses intact, and cannot be built over during the Exploration Age, but will return to the normal Academy after the Exploration Age is over.

Civilopedia entry[]

While universities are massive institutions of general study, academies are places for philosophical reflection. Confucian academies were quintessential examples – places where students of Confucianism could study and debate the classics. Expertise in classical texts was necessary to advance in the bureaucracy. In Greece, the classical academy was a school originally named for a grove of trees sacred to Athena, and scholars such as Plato and Socrates taught there. These schools emphasized debate and philosophy as well as a close relationship between teachers and students – a tradition exported to Persia under Alexander’s conquests. Academies merged naturally into larger universities in Africa (specifically Mali, Morocco, and Egypt) as interests and knowledge expanded, and as society realized it could no longer expect students to be masters of astronomy, philosophy, religion, and mathematics all at once!
