Civilopedia entry[]

Flight took numerous small hops before it fully leaped into our lives – and the battlefield. Scholars during antiquity in Europe and the Middle East experimented by strapping feathers to their arms and flapping (never seeming to notice that even birds need tails for control). Leonardo da Vinci designed gyrocopters and artificial wings that he hoped would enable people to take flight. With the advent of the airplane in the early 20th century, people were finally able to take to the skies. Still, these devices took up space. Wings create lift, but only by moving forward at high speed, which requires a long, flat runway. Thus, the Aerodrome: a vast open space with massive hangars and quaint buildings for humans (seemingly insignificant in comparison with their creations).
