Civilopedia entry[]
The bane of middle schoolers everywhere, Al-Jabr is better known in English as algebra. The term is the shortened name of the “Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing” by the Abbasid scholar Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī. This text, detailing polynomial equations and elementary algebra, represents the advances in mathematical thought by the Abbasids and their contribution to the fields of math and astronomy. For further evidence of their import, we need look no further than the many English words for mathematical and astronomical concepts that are borrowed from Arabic, such as algebra, algorithm, azimuth, nadir; or the Arabic numerals that have replaced Roman ones in the Latin script, including those used in this game.
