Civilopedia entry[]

The division between the sacred and profane refers to the split between things of this world and things of the next (in this case, “profane” refers to “earthly,” not “impolite"). An altar is the meeting point between these two worlds, where offerings or other signs of respect are given. These were often sites of immolation, where food or other earthly goods were set as burnt offerings and transformed into divine smoke and ash. Catholic altars are the sites where bread and wine become divine flesh and blood, and Buddhist altars carry burnt incense before images of the Enlightened One. Not all religions have altars. For example, mosques do not, which is unsurprising for a religion that privileges the written word over the material. Also, many animist faiths do not separate the sacred and profane, at least not in the confines of a house of worship.
