Southeast Asian concepts of power come in two forms – there is worldly power, the ability to force or compel someone to do something; and there is charismatic power, the ability to win love and support from others and the universe itself. The former, known as amnach in Khmer, is seen as amoral: villainous bandits and righteous kings may both wield it. The latter, parami, comes from righteous actions, good karma, and favors from blessed things.
Southeast Asian politics has often been characterized as revolving around “men of prowess” – people with the strength and prestige to draw others to them and make things happen. This power was not necessarily linked to lineage or precedent but came through the cultivation of authority across multiple fields: magical power, political influence, and military might. Righteousness, inasmuch as it built parami, was also a tool towards a softer, but no less compelling, form of power.
