Civilopedia entry[]
The word “amphitheater” references a semicircular or circular ring of seats surrounding a stage where performances, speeches, gladiatorial contests, poetry, and the like could be staged. The term is specific to Greek and Roman contexts, where it performed a key role in public entertainment. However, if "amphitheater" is used to reference any gathering point for performances, we find examples across several societies, from Balinese dance to Chinese village opera to the singing of Malinese griots. Stories are crafted to be shared, whether that be a politician’s speech, a mythological tale projected in shadow on a screen in a Malay market, or a story writ in bronze and blood upon gladiatorial ground.
