Antarctica is a region of Earth that encompasses the South Pole. No civilizations are native to Antarctica, but 12 different countries (Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States) presently lay claim to it under the Antarctic Treaty System. It is also home to the Amundsen-Scott Research Station.
