Civilopedia entry[]
The understanding of the past as a place both different from but sharing some link to the present, and an interest in collecting information about and objects from that past, has existed in places as disparate as ancient Egypt to Song-era China. But the Enlightenment and later eras in Europe provided a particularly rich ground – Europeans first delved into classical history; then, during the 18th century obsession with nationalism and national origins, European prehistory; and finally, during the high colonial era, Europeans obsessed themselves with the past of their new “possessions.”
Here, names like Heinrich Schliemann, who excavated Troy; Flinders Petrie, who examined the Great Pyramid; Howard Carter, who opened the tomb of Tutankhamun; and others come to mind. These discoveries fueled a boom in the late 19th and early 20th century in Britain for all things of the ancient world. The figure of the antiquarian lies here: a collector of things and a curator of interest in the past.
