The Roman aqueducts achieved a technical sophistication not seen again for over a thousand years. Running from the river Arno, the aqueducts covered three hundred miles with some reaching over twelve miles in length. Roman engineers didn't flinch from massive construction; the Pont du Gard, a three-tier bridge in France, reaches a height of one hundred and fifty feet over the lowest point of the valley below.
