Archaeology is a recurring element in the Civilization games.
Civilization IV

Unlike in later entries, archaeology plays a minor role in Beyond the Sword as part of a couple events. If there are City Ruins near or within one's civilization, there is a 90% chance that scouts (an archaeological expedition in the Modern or Future Eras) will either discover a cache of knowledge or uncover lost treasures, texts and artifacts. The player can either send commendations to the leaders of the exploring party, completing 15% of a researchable technology, or spend 5% of one's current 
research to fund additional exploratory efforts for the same result but with a 50% chance of a bonus.
Similarly, if there is a Desert tile within one's civilization then there is a 90% chance of an event appearing saying that archaeologists have unearthed a cache of scrolls and stone tablets buried in the desert sands. The player can either disperse the texts to various researchers and specialists, completing 15% of a researchable technology, or spend 200 
Gold to fund an effort to preserve these artifacts in museums.
