Civilopedia entry[]
The bow originated in human history long before nearly any feature of this game, except perhaps the spear. The bow's design is simple: a length of elastic material (often animal tendon but possibly plant fiber) is stretched between two points of a straight wooden staff, often a fusion of supple and rigid wood. As the elastic material bends against the resilience of the wood, a great deal of tensile force is stored, which can be used to propel arrows through the air. Arrows are thus often affixed with feathers for stability in flight. Small bows were and are used by hunters worldwide, but lack the power to inflict much damage on a human body – although poison can amplify the effect. Given the right wood or the addition of other materials such as iron or bone, bows can be made more powerful. The first recorded evidence of bows is nearly 70,000 years old; this technology has likely been with us since nearly the beginning.
