Civilopedia entry[]
The European empires of the 16th-18th centuries were built on sails. Ships designed for intercontinental travel were large and valuable – as was their cargo. But such ships could easily be converted to warships, especially with cannons now portable enough to fit on board, and powerful enough to cause significant damage to enemy ships.
The Spanish Armada was commissioned by Philip II of Spain for an invasion of England in 1588. While some ships were armed merchantmen, the Armada's quintessential ship was the galleon (a name that essentially means “armed merchantman”). These ships could be between 500 and 2,000 tons, with double stacks of cannon. Despite these arms, the Armada was defeated by a combination of bad weather, English ships with more maneuverability, and a cunning use of fireboats (ships loaded with flammable material sent amidst the Spanish fleet).
