Armor is a Modern-era offensive ground unit in Civilization II, available with the Mobile Warfare advance. It succeeds Cavalry, and is the terminus of the mounted unit line.
Strategy[]
Armor is a significant upgrade from the cavalry line it replaces, and the strongest general-purpose ground unit in the game. Its high Attack strength and movement make it optimal for combating units in open field. It is less effective when facing Fortresses and City Walls; Artillery remains optimal against entrenched defenders.
Armor is technically the strongest land defender until the advent of Mechanized Infantry: its 3 hit points give it better staying power than dedicated defensive units like Alpine Troops; however, this bonus is marginal against contemporary offensive units, while Armor's high Shield cost makes it an inefficient choice for cities with low production.
Civilopedia entry[]
The rise in the use of semi-automatic and automatic firearms in the late 19th and early 20th century led to the demise of horse-mounted cavalry. Attackers lost a significant advantage in both scouting and deployment as a result of the cavalry's vulnerability. It was only with the development of tanks, armored mobile attack vehicles equipped with high caliber guns, that a weapon was found which could once more be used to punch a hole through enemy field forces. First appearing in World War I, armored attack vehicles moved quickly and struck with power, while still possessing an effective defensive strength. Tanks are a powerful weapon against any ground unit.
Modding[]
Armor is defined at Line 23 of the @UNITS section of Rules.txt. It uses a variation of the artillery sound suite: MEDGUN.WAV for each hit animation in combat, and LARGEXPL.WAV on conclusion. In Test of Time, it uses the custom sound Oldcannons.wav.
Trivia[]
- The Armor sprite in the original Civ II is based on the Soviet PT-76 light tank.
