Civilopedia entry[]

Arms are expensive. For many ancient and medieval armies, knights went into battle with arms and armor that they had purchased themselves. This made feudal armies cheaper to maintain but with the added risk that a military defeat would mean the loss of stewards, governors, dukes, barons, etc. Armies in the premodern period moved back and forth between levels of professionalism – meaning military leaders could be fully employed by the state or work part-time as farmers (or barons). The development of mass-produced arms was vital for professional armies. An arms factory could produce interchangeable arms and armor to quickly equip a large force, and a professional army could maintain its training even when not marching to war. However, professional armies require money, and soldiers often have ambitions beyond the battlefield (as the Romans constantly discovered).
