Civilopedia entry[]
Cannons arrived on the battlefields of Central Asia during the time of the Mongols. It was only a matter of time and technology before cannons became more streamlined and mobile, taking the form of guns. The arquebus was a long gun developed in the 15th century. Its weight was a drawback, and users had to rest the gun's barrel on another object – thus the name, a derivative of the Dutch Haakbus (hook-gun) that referred to a small protrusion on the weapon’s underside used to steady it against a solid surface. The Ottomans used the arquebus to devastating effect, and it was quickly adopted by their European opponents. After their first appearance in Eastern Europe, guns migrated across the Old World in a mere century, and they figured into the horrific Sengoku Wars in Japan at the close of the 1600s. Early arquebuses were inaccurate, but their range far exceeded the bow, so they quickly outpaced bows and crossbows.
