Civilopedia entry[]
The Egyptians called their land Kemet, the black land, the land of fertile soils, washed by the Nile flood and replenished. While we often associate floods with destruction, they are vital for many agricultural systems: as flooding rivers recede, they leave behind layer upon layer of fertile soil. The Nile's flooding is especially significant. As Ibn Battuta remarked, it rises when other rivers fall, and falls when other rivers rise. The androgynous deity Hapi – a god/dess with drooping breasts and a sizeable paunch who was both male and female – was responsible for this yearly gift. Hapi’s priests were thus entrusted with keeping the Nile’s floods nourishing, and not destructive. As such, they operated as soothsayers and ancient hydrologists.
