Artillery remains vital to any military venture; much as the cannon ended the era of castles, artillery placed cities at risk. Artillery movement and setup are slow, but adding tank treads allowed for easier positioning. Assault guns were first deployed en masse during World War II. They provided direct fire (i.e. shooting straight at the enemy) and indirect fire (i.e. launching shells in a high arc into populated areas or fortifications) and soon became a core feature of German and Soviet armies. These weapons could also be easily converted into anti-tank machines, and the German Sturmgeschütz became the exemplar of this service.
