Civilopedia entry[]

Imagine the night sky in a world lit by fire. Above all the dirt exists the heavens – pinpricks of flawless light moving in a constant pattern. It is little wonder that astronomy and astrology were linked by people such as the Greeks and Maya. The movement of the stars had to mean something important – had to be connected to the ineffable systems of reality: fate, disease, weather, fortune. In the ancient era, astronomy was performed with the naked eye, often using artificial structures (e.g. the rocks at Stonehenge or the markers on Maya observatories) to observe the rising points of significant astronomical features. Once astronomers noticed a pattern in the sky's movements, new calculations could be made, which required ever more advanced mathematical theories. These theories would eventually bear fruit during the Islamic Golden Age and form the basis of much of our mathematical knowledge today.
