Civilopedia entry[]
“I am the state,” proclaimed Louis XIV. Thus the Sun King declared himself to be synonymous with the power of the French Empire – not a representative of the masses, nor an efficient manager of the heritage of the land, but authority embodied. For Louis, as for other absolute monarchies – Imperial Germany, Meiji Japan, Fifth Reign Siam, and Tsarist Russia, to name a few – authority became the ultimate feature of absolutist rule. This was a modern invention. As feudalism decayed, a centralized bureaucratic state based around the body of the sovereign and the apparatus of rule grew. This was a kind of despotism, but one where authority was enshrined in royal charisma – the Russian tsars and the French kings had to prove their authority by increasingly elaborate spectacles of power lest they be perceived as less than they claimed. It set the stage for the twilight of the Exploration era and the end of the golden age of monarchy.
