Civilopedia entry[]
Ayllu are clans in Inca society, but they are also more than that. An ayllu is a community with a common fictive ancestor that controls a particular area of land. On that level, they managed the land and dealt with larger demands, such as the imperial corvée known as the mit’a. The preservation of local communities is a key function of imperial control; it allows for local land management, keeps leadership relatively autonomous, and permits communal practices even among larger unequal systems. Ayllu made a mark on the landscape, preserving shrines of local deities and sacred spaces as well as markers of faith and fealty to the tirakuna (the earth beings).
