Civilopedia entry[]
A castle was more than its garrison. It functioned like a small town, with stables, storehouses, workshops, and chapels. These were built in the bailey, a fortified settlement wrapped around the base of the motte. Protected by palisades or walls, the bailey provided for the domestic and economic needs of the castle complex, and offered additional space for services that could not fit in the keep (or should not, such as kitchens, which were built away from major buildings as they were prone to fire). The keep could be accessed via stairs cut into the motte or a flying bridge that could be raised during an attack.
Baileys, also called wards, remained a constant feature of castles beyond the motte-and-bailey era. Larger fortresses often had multiple baileys, with those on the outside dedicated to defensive measures and expendable structures, while the inner ward housed services crucial to survival during a prolonged siege.
