Civilopedia entry[]
The ability to create ever-stronger bows increased the need to train ever-stronger archers. However, after a point, machines proved more powerful than muscles. Powerful bows developed into crossbows, which developed into flattened oxybeles, machine-cranked bows with powerful shots. With additional knowledge of mechanical engineering, these weapons were refined into the ballista, a great bow wound by torsion strings that could fling bolts or stones long distances. Ballistae were used in Rome and Greece beginning around 400 BCE, and their ranged attacks were truly devastating. These giant bolt throwers were phased out as warfare grew more diffuse and disorganized, but saw a revival in the Middle Ages alongside larger weapons like trebuchets.
