Civilopedia entry[]

A bang, as in “Bang Kok," is a water-based community in Central Thailand. It differs from a “baan,” which is a compound of structures built outside a canal system. In a landscape such as Thailand’s, where land transforms into water during certain times of year, water-based communities allowed for the easy transport of goods and relatively quicker forms of travel, especially when roads were subject to washing out or flooding, and buffalo could only carry so much material. Bang often have a central Buddhist temple, a central canal, basic irrigation system, and a community center surrounded by rice fields or other crops. Historically, the canal (khlong) was the center of life; Buddhist monks made their alms rounds on them, markets were held atop them, and villagers largely came and went through them via water. Today, many bang have been overtaken by concrete and automobiles, but behind concrete buildings the quieter, slower life of the bang carries on.

Trivia[]

  • The term "bang" comes from the word บาง in Thai, meaning "a village on a stream." This is also where the commonly used name of Bangkok is from.
