Civilopedia entry[]
What exactly is banking? Wealthy merchants in antiquity would often give credit or loans to farmers who supplied them; Mesopotamian and Roman temples also served as banks, taking a percentage of the gold deposited as profit. However, modern banks emerged during the Middle Ages when practices linked to long-distance caravans began to influence everyday agricultural production. In Europe, these banks were often owned by Jews who, barred from mainstream sources of income (i.e. holding land), were able to circumvent the religious ban on lending money with interest – a practice forbidden to Christians. Indeed, Christian elites depended on banking systems, often giving rise to the very anti-Semitism that created the conditions that made banking possible. Elsewhere, early Chinese systems of banking came about, often focused on transfers and money-changing (from silver to paper), rather than interest and loans. Today, banking financial services are a cornerstone of the world’s wealth – and disparity.
