Civilopedia entry[]
The Angkorean civilization revolved around the control of water, specifically the great backflow of the Mekong River during the monsoon. Royal religious rites often named the monarch as the mediator between the heavens and the populations. As divinity made flesh, the king was responsible for ensuring that his people prospered – and prosperity in Southeast Asia depended on water. Baray were massive reservoirs (the West Baray could hold 14 million gallons of water) and were proof of the king’s ability to care for his people. Baray evoke the Sea of Creation in Hindu/Buddhist myth, combining both religious meaning and practical engineering in a single structure.
