Civilopedia entry[]

During the Roman Republic, cities began constructing basilicas, spaces in which the populace could conduct business transactions and legal processes. These rectangular buildings typically featured a central hall bordered by aisles. One or both ends of the structure were raised to accommodate a magistrate tribunal or a statue of the emperor. By the first century BC, basilicas had grown into immense, elaborate monuments and became a hallmark of Roman urbanism. The Forum in Rome held no less than seven. As a core element of the forum model, basilicas were built in settlements as far away as Britain. They became so ingrained in Roman life that small versions were attached to the houses of aristocrats, who used them to host guests and manage private business.
