Civilopedia entry[]
Humans are creatures of the earth and muck – at the end of each day, our bodies are covered with sweat, dirt, oil, cooking grease, or worse. Those with children understand the level of humanity's filth, intimately. But societies idealize the perfect body, one fresh and clean. As a result, baths become important as sites for ritual, recreational, or daily purification. The Great Bath at Mohenjo-Daro is one such site: a massive well-fed pool in modern-day Pakistan. We have yet to decipher this society's script, so the details are lost, but this was evidently a pool for washing human bodies (whether common or noble). Likewise, Roman baths were places for relaxation and conversation, and Japanese onsen were key destinations for a relaxing weekend, especially during industrial times. Baths required detailed knowledge of plumbing, pumping, and people skilled in evaluating different geothermal sources of water – not to mention all the materials needed to purge the human body of its dirt, physical, mental, or spiritual.
