Civilopedia entry[]

In 1929, work began on a coal-fired power station in Battersea, London, on the north bank of the Thames. Designed by Theo J. Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott (who was also responsible for Britain’s famous red phone box), the Art Deco structure was fashioned to hold two power stations in a single building. By the time of its completion in 1955, Battersea Power Station was one of the largest brick buildings in the world. Smoke from its 101-meter chimneys provided directional guidance for pilots during WWII, and the building appeared on the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1977 album “Animals.” Battersea Power Station did not run for long – its stations were decommissioned separately in 1975 and 1983. After sitting empty for over 30 years, the landmark has recently found new life as a shopping and residential center.
