Armed sailing ships were massive vessels with row upon row of cannons. Battleships were a 20th-century iteration – massive warships that could singlehandedly swing the fortunes of a naval war. 19th-century doctrine held that a single battleship could outclass a host of cruisers, destroyers, and other ships; the conflict between multiple battleships could decide the entire conflict. The height of the battleship era was World War II, but the end of their reign was written during the conflict. Battleships could outperform cruisers and other light warships, but they were severely challenged by the rise of torpedoes, submarines, and aircraft, demonstrated by the dramatic sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato in 1945.
