Civilopedia entry[]
The World War II-era Spitfire and Zero receive much of the glory surrounding fighter aircraft. However, World War I also had its fair share of fighter craft. Most of these were biplanes – aircraft with two wings, similar to the Wright brothers’ original (though some had three, like the Fokker Triplane). The advantage of two wings was structural support, but the design created drag. This style of plane held two people: a pilot and someone who could fire a weapon. Handheld guns were not as useful as mounted guns, but mounted guns ran the risk of shredding the craft itself. This was especially problematic as the ideal place to mount a gun was right behind the propeller. The ingenious solution was to sync the firing of the gun with the turning of the propeller so bullets flew between the blades as they turned. Biplane dogfighting was made famous by the “Red Baron,” Manfred von Richthofen, a German fighter pilot during World War I who boasted over 80 planes shot down. However, once aluminum reached broad use, individual wings became stronger, and the biplane ended use.
