Civilopedia entry[]
The Assyrian army was the most effective military force in the world, and was highly skilled at siege warfare. Their conquests came through the use of siege weapons, earthen ramps, and psychological warfare in addition to their well-trained troops and efficient tactics. Thus the Assyrians were well-informed when it came to building their own fortified cities (birtūtu). A combination of towers and thick crenelated walls offered protection to those within, while moats and ramps could be effectively defended from above. Gates, always a fortress’s weakest points, were not only physically tough, but were richly decorated with mythic creatures and martial reliefs to intimidate invaders and visitors alike.
