Civilopedia entry[]

Smithies are a fundamental part of ironworking. Early metals were gold, silver, and copper, though none of these are ideal for forging durable tools or weapons (unless one is fighting werewolves). Copper can be made into an alloy (bronze) that is hard, sharp, and corrosion-resistant. Still, bronze does not require a smithy. Smithies existed across the Old World, from West and East Africa to Europe to China – though the New World had yet to master iron at the time the Europeans arrived.

With smelted iron (i.e. not meteoric iron), one must constantly heat and pound the metal to render it pliable, allowing it to properly harden when cooled. Iron weapons were not generally superior to bronze (at least at temperatures too low to produce steel); iron swords had to be straightened after just a few strikes in combat because they easily warped. However, iron was more economical. Efficient forges, as in Rome or Song Dynasty China, could produce iron with a greater steel content.

In a smithy, charcoal or coal is used to power a forge, and the blacksmith heats the metal until it glows, while a striker repeatedly pounds the metal into shape. An efficient forge could produce weapons as well as tools for a variety of purposes.

Due to their necessary function in societies, smiths often had a role in mythology – consider Vulcan, or Ilmarinen, or Ogun, or the blacksmith caste of Maasai culture who gained a reputation for magic and lived under rules of enforced celibacy.
