Greetings, Civ fans! The moment you've been waiting ages for is almost here: Civilization: Beyond Earth, the next installment in Sid Meier's illustrious Civilization franchise, is a mere few weeks from finding its way onto your computer and occupying countless hours (or years) of your life.

Learning the ins and outs of a new entry in the Civilization series can always prove overwhelming. "The Great Mistake" Revealed! (Kind Of)

The exact nature of Civilization: Beyond Earth's "Great Mistake" has been the subject of much debate since being revealed as the game's cryptic backstory, and that ambiguity was absolutely deliberate, lead designers Will Miller and David McDonough said during a Firaxicon panel devoted to the catastrophe, a choice meant to reinforce the game's focus on the future, rather than distracting players with details about the past.

That hasn't stopped Miller and McDonough from having some fun imagining how an event like The Great Mistake might actually take place. In their mind, The Great Mistake had to fulfill certain requirements in order to prove disastrous enough to compel the world population to establish civilization on a new planet. It had to…

Firaxicon Kicks off with a talk from Lena Brenk

Greetings from Baltimore, MD! Firaxicon kicked off this morning with an interesting presentation from Lena Brenk, Civilization: Beyond Earth's lead producer, who discussed the challenges of accurately portraying the wide variety of cultures in the Civ. Because the game is rooted in multiculturalism and its audience is becoming increasingly international, Lena and the rest of Firaxis work hard to maximize immersion for players everywhere, consulting language "experts" -- sometimes even the friends and relatives of Firaxis team members -- to ensure cultural accuracy.

Beyond Earth presented a unique set of linguistic challenges due to its futurized take on the world's cultures. In many cases, the sponsors speak in fictional tongues that are a …

A Brief Personal History of Civilization with a Look Into the Future

My first contact with the Civilization franchise was in the lower elementary school. Our teacher would put a transparency full of text on the overhead projector and then disappear behind the computer on his desk for the rest of the lecture while we copied the contents of the transparency to our notebooks. During the recess we sneaked to see what was so interesting. Turns out it was a game called Civilization (1991). We didn't know any English back then and couldn't understand anything, but obviously it was a great game. I tried to acquire a demo, but only got some slide-set like non-playable introduction thing. Back then there was no "World Wide Web" to download games from.

Fast forward a few years to 1996, and Civilization II was published. It …

Greetings from Firaxis Games

Greetings, Sid Meier's Civilization fans!

In the days of ancient civilizations, videogame information was shared in the form of manuals printed on clay tablets or hieroglyphics on papyrus scrolls. Then later, monks would sit at desks and write out videogame facts until the printing press was invented. And now, we are in a new era, where videogame information lives on the Internet, and thousands of players like you can add or edit or change or annotate information on Civ.

Civ fans are, without a doubt, the best teachers and experts on how to play Civilization. This project with Wikia represents a chance for you, the real experts at Civ, to share your knowledge with each other, new players, and with the world. This is the Great Library or Nat…

My next goal

Having revised all of the Civilization V leader and civilization pages for grammar, style, and complete Civilopedia entries and done the same for almost all of the unit, building, and technology pages, I've started adding more detailed descriptions to the pages of the Civilization IV leaders. These descriptions will include a General Info section with unique units, unique buildings, starting technologies, musical theme (if known), and some historical and in-game tidbits about the leader, an AI Behaviors and a Civilopedia Entry section with information taken from http://www.civilization.org.pl/civilopedia/index.php , and a Trivia section (if applicable). If anyone has any further suggestions for sections to add, don't hesitate to share them.

Civilization: Beyond Earth announced!

Exciting news! Firaxis has just announced a new Civ game: Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth! The game is a spiritual successor to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and will be published in autumn 2014. It takes place in an alien planet when the mankind starts settling the space. PC Gamer has an in-depth interview with the designer duo David McDonough and Will Miller. The game has several new concepts, such as a technology web instead of a technology tree, and factions and affinities instead of civilizations in the traditional sense.

What has civilization has done for me?

What has civilization done for me? Well a lot actually. Besides providing hours and hours of entertainment (according to steamI'm now up to 326 hours in Civ 5, not to mention the countless hours I spent playing Civ 2- 4 before the advent of steam) Civ has helped decide the course of my life. I sometimes sarcastically claim that everything I know about religion and history I learned from video games. But the more I look at this statement the more I realize how true it is. Now Civ alone doesn't deserve all the credit many other excellent games based in history helped me too, but the Civilization series is by far the most important. I have spent a lot of time browsing the civilopedia, not only to improve my game but to learn a lot about the t…
