The popular conception of the Middle Ages invokes knights, catapults, courtly graces, and the Mongol threat. This is a limited European vision. Indeed, the first cannon was used in the 1100s during China's Song Dynasty (the notion that Chinese empires only used gunpowder for fireworks is a myth), though these were smaller than the modern notion of “bombards." Larger guns entered the fray in China in the 1300s and quickly spread across the world. They were especially important during the Turks' conquest of Constantinople in 1453; the Theodosian Walls which had stood for ages against conventional weaponry fell to fire and iron. A bombard is simply an iron pot or tube loaded with powder and armed with iron or stone shot – still, operators must have lived in constant fear of backfires, misfires, and outright explosions.
