High ground has its advantages, as even Paleolithic tacticians understood. And what is higher than the sky? Early bombers were ordinary planes outfitted with pilots who could drop standard hand grenades. By 1913, these had evolved into aircraft with bombsights and salvos of up to a dozen bombs. The Germans loaded Zeppelins with bombs, allowing their ordinance to be dropped behind enemy lines at angles against which artillery struggled to defend. Bombers were especially important in attacking logistical lines.
During World War II, bombers were vital elements of the military’s arsenal, and specialized bombers could launch torpedoes or unload heavy ordinance. Some bombers were dedicated to hitting enemy lines while others were equipped for enemy shipping lanes. As fighters proliferated, air combat modernized. The catastrophes of the Blitz, the destruction of Dresden, and the bombing of Tokyo all demonstrate the destructive capacity of airpower.
