Civilopedia entry[]
Indonesia’s primary island of Java may not be its largest, but it has been home to a variety of faiths: Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, in the case of the eighth century Borobudur. The largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur fell into ruin after Hinduism and Buddhism declined in Java in the 14th century (though Hindu traditions continued in Bali). It rests in nine tiers, with over 500 Buddha images (in Mahayana traditions, multiple individuals have achieved Buddha-hood, so one refers to a Buddha, rather than the Buddha).
Borobudur also reflects the international influence in the area. The Sailendra Dynasty, responsible for building the temple, drew from Indian sources for its cultural and religious development, sent trade delegations to China, and engaged in a series of wars with the Khmer – leading to Khmer’s independence and the origins of the Khmer Empire.
Trivia[]
- Borobudur's wonder quote comes from the Heart Sūtra, a popular sūtra in Mahayana Buddhism.
