Civilopedia entry[]

Berlin is at the heart of European history. The city has seen liberalism, militarism, democracy, communism, and fascism. Berliners have experienced devastation, occupation, empire, ruin, and the specter of domination that wears multiple masks. Each moment in history left its mark on the city. But through all these changes, the Brandenberg Gate has remained.

Built in 1791, the neoclassical gate marked the beginning of the road to Brandenberg, the Holy Roman Empire-era capital of the margraviate (state) of the same name. The gate marked a break in the wall surrounding the city but became more important as a symbol. It was partially dismantled by a victorious Napoleon, made into an imperial symbol during the Kaiser’s reign, employed as a fascist symbol during Nazi rule, and used to display Soviet flags during the partition of East and West Berlin. When the American president Ronald Reagan called upon Premier Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” he prefaced it with “open this (Brandenburg) gate.” When the wall came down, the gate became a symbol of European freedom and hope. It remains a symbol for these, even today.
