Civilopedia entry[]

Bricks are some of the first building materials used by cities. Early brick structures – especially in the Middle East, which feature buildings nearly ten thousand years old – were rectangles of clay mud, and sometimes straw, that were dried in the sun. The most impressive of these is Jericho, which had the oldest known protective wall in the world. However, making bricks in the sun is difficult in moist or cool climates. Instead, one needs to fire a brick to preserve it – a technique used extensively everywhere from India to Rome to China, where they form part of the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. Bricks, in this way, are essentially a crude form of pottery.

For most of antiquity and the Middle Ages, brickmaking involved treading over clay by foot in a muddy pit to remove impurities and make it malleable and consistent. The clay was then poured into a mold and left to dry in the sun for a summer. At the end of the season, the bricks would be stacked into a structure – a kiln – that was loaded with wood and set ablaze. At the end of several days of firing, the bricks would be ready for construction.
