Civilopedia Entry[]
Southern India is home to groups that are ethnically and linguistically distinct from the rest of the country – primarily the Tamil people. Though Tamils follow Hinduism, they developed unique traditions and achieved a period of international fame and might during the Chola Dynasty in the first millennium CE (and part of the second). Brihadeeswarar is a testament to Tamil's rich culture, wealth, and strength. The “Meru (sacred mountain of Hindu myth) of the South,” the temple sprawls across a large complex designed for perambulation by pilgrims. At its center is the vimana – the pyramid-shaped tower adorned with carvings and limited to Hindu priests. While many temples were elaborately painted, it is a matter of contemporary debate whether or not the vimana at Brihadeeswarar was (or should be) painted. The tower is currently a sandy orange stone – impressive, regardless of adornments.
The temple is dedicated to Shiva, popularly known as the god of destruction, but his portfolio is far more extensive. Whereas many regions produced physical icons that display Shiva in a variety of poses, those in the Tamil regions often display Shiva dancing, indicating the god’s active movement – at least until his foot comes down, and the world’s age ends.
Trivia[]
- The Brihadeeswarar Temple's wonder quote comes from the Katha Upanishad, one of the Śruti, religious texts that comprise the canon of Hinduism.
