Resource plus 2 extra slots).
Civilopedia entry[]
Much like horses, camels – those two-toed, malcontented ungulates termed “ships of the desert” – are New World animals that crossed the Bering land bridge at a distant point in prehistory, only to survive in the Old World and die off in the New (their relatives, the llamas, remain). Camels present certain advantages over horses. Most obvious is their ability to survive for long periods of time without water. A camel’s hump(s) are made of fat, which is composed largely of water, allowing them to survive without drinking for over a week. Camel blood cells are specially adapted to withstand rapid influxes of water, enabling them to replenish water stores in one great draught. Additionally, horses appear to be repelled by the scent of camels, which is a surprising benefit in cavalry combat.
There are two varieties of camels: the “one-humped” dromedary, domesticated in the Near East, and the “two-humped” Bactrian camel, domesticated in Central Asia around the same time. Arab, Ottoman, Mughal, and Persian forces all made extensive use of camels, as did the Mongol, Roman, and Chinese armies, to a lesser extent.
