Civilopedia entry[]

One of the key features of a Hindu temple built in the Majapahit style is the candi bentar – the split gate. Resembling a mountain cracked in half, the candi bentar offers a glimpse of a world breaking open to reveal another one nested inside. It resembles a stupa (a dome-shaped structure) that has been divided in two, with smooth inner walls that act as the passageway for dancers of classical Javanese performances. The gates have no function other than aesthetic – no defensive purpose other than to generate awe.

Hinduism in Indonesia was largely replaced by Islam in the 16th century, and remaining adherents fled to the island of Bali, where the population remains mostly Hindu. These forms of Hinduism have long departed from what is practiced in South Asia, although the basic structure remains: the relevant deities, features such as caste, philosophical underpinnings, etc. Balinese temples place a great emphasis on water, with a system of temples at spring sources, at the central point in the village, and downstream of the village – sites corresponding to creation, rule, and destruction, accordingly.
