Civilopedia entry[]
Capitalism is not free trade, though free trade is a key part of it. Instead, capitalism posits that any one planner cannot anticipate all of society's needs, but the natural law of supply and demand works (like an “invisible hand”) to help fill the needs of the masses. One thinks of the writings of Adam Smith, or Friedrich Hayek. For Karl Marx, capitalism was a system where those who owned the means of production (e.g. a factory or its machines) would hire workers, and profit was generated when the value of products produced exceeded the wages paid. In this way of thinking, capitalism was exploitative. When certain command economies fail and unexpected needs arise outside the purview of a planner, capitalism can succeed and fill that gap. On the other hand, capitalism's failures are seen in situations like the Indian famine of 1884, when railroads allowed grain to be moved to places where it yielded higher prices – leaving peasants unable to purchase it and starve. Capitalism remains the dominant form of economic exchange today – even communist societies such as China and Vietnam embraced certain aspects of capitalism through the 1990s.
