Civilopedia entry[]
Medieval Muslim trade routes crossed some of the most inhospitable terrain of their day. From the dry Eurasian steppe to the wastes of the Sahara, merchants needed places for rest and shelter during their journey. The word “caravanserai” is Persian in origin, and likely would not have been used by the Songhai, but the concept is the same: a rest station. Given the importance of trans-Saharan trade for the Songhai, these stops were vital in the maintenance and prosperity of trade routes. A typical caravanserai had walls for defense against raiders (or storms), stalls for animals, baths, mosques, and small markets.
