Civilopedia entry[]
In the late Middle Ages, the Portuguese emerged as the masters of shipbuilding. Combining the best of Islamic astronomy and Northern European shipbuilding, the Portuguese created the carrack, a three-masted oceangoing ship that could withstand the swells of the Atlantic. Older cogs were versatile but costly. In contrast, the carrack could sport six sails (two on the topsail alone) making for a much faster vessel. The carrack allowed Portuguese traders to directly exchange gold for spices in India and silks in China, bypassing the challenges of the Silk Road. The design was quickly adopted by Muslim and Bengali traders and became a template for oceangoing vessels throughout the early Age of Sail.
