Civilopedia entry[]
Spain secured vast wealth and power through international endeavors, but these exploits were not effortless. They required immense preparation, organization, and maintenance, and in 1503 the crown opened the Casa de Contratación (“House of Trade”) in Seville to administer the demands of expansion. The Casa’s responsibilities were many – from handling the finances of Spain’s trading empire through taxation, revenue, and duty collection to organizing trade missions as well as provisioning and licensing the ships of the treasure fleet.
Throughout history, the Casa de Contratación also oversaw cartography for the exploration effort. Ship captains and officers returning from the New World reported discoveries and their locations under oath to officials. This information was passed on to the cartographers, who incorporated it into the Padrón Real, a secret and ever-growing map of the Spanish Empire. Charts were copied from this master and distributed to ships when they embarked on new voyages. In this way, the Casa de Contratación maintained control of information flowing from Spanish explorers and merchants while ensuring their ships were always up to date with the latest maps.
