Civilopedia entry[]
It is very hard to knock down a stone fortress with only a sword. Castles were the solution to a landscape plagued by enemies and threats. While the lands outside a castle's walls could be despoiled, everything really valuable, including peasants and livestock, could be gathered inside those walls. This system was intimately connected with feudalism, as the responsibility for local protection fell upon local lords, especially in times when a centralized state was weak.
Castles are traditionally defined as fortified private residences. Historically, the stereotypical castle emerged in the later part of the first millennium CE, and the Norman practice of bringing stone castle technology to England was a key factor in their conquest. In Asia, where feudal systems predominated (e.g. Sengoku Japan), castles also became important features of the political landscape.
While castles provided ample protection against swords, they were less effective against gunpowder. As weaponry became more and more advanced, larger and larger fortifications were required for security; when weapons took to the skies, castles were rendered entirely obsolete.
