The Catapult is an Ancient-era siege unit in Civilization II, available with the Mathematics advance. It is the strongest offensive ground unit of the Ancient era, effective for assaulting entrenched defenders and walled cities.
The Catapult is succeeded by Cannon.
Strategy[]
Catapults' high attack helps to overcome the defensive bonus of fortresses, walls, and rough terrain such as hills and rivers. Veteran catapults are generally a match for most units of the Ancient era, although multiple catapults will be needed to overcome compounded defenses. Their low movement and defense leave them vulnerable to flanking by mounted units; escorting catapults with defensive units is advisable when moving through hostile territory.
Catapults remain capable into the early Renaissance, but are rendered effectively obsolete with the advent of Musketeers, and should be replaced with Cannon by a player confronting gunpowder units.
Civilopedia entry[]
The catapult was one of the earliest forms of artillery. It was a large mechanical arm that propelled heavy stones and other missiles from a great distance, battering down walls and inflicting damage on buildings and defenders. Though cumbersome and nearly useless on the battlefield, the catapult was an effective weapon for attacking cities and fortified enemies.
Modding[]
The Catapult is defined at Line 24 of the @UNITS section of Rules.txt. It uses the unique attack sound CATAPULT.WAV.
